Understanding Snags

As I was walking in one of the Conservation Parks the other day, I saw that a dead tree had finally fallen. This was not particularly eventful, and I do not know if it made a sound or not, but this dead tree was something that I had admired on my hikes for a while. Over the seasons, I’d watch it become bare of its bark, see more woodpecker holes in its trunk, and admire the life that it still fostered as it slowly decayed upright. I’m sad to see it fall, its suddenly exposed old roots becoming a tangle of new habitat, but I know it’ll still be a long while before it's gone.

While some areas of our parks and preserves are kept well-manicured for our safety and enjoyment, the dead trees remain a necessary staple – as long as they’re not presenting a hazard to hikers, of course. But why? They don’t provide shade to cool our parks, nor fruit to feed wildlife, nor blooming flowers for pollinators; what are they contributing to the environment? A lot!

As a tree reaches the end of its lifespan, it slowly begins to “senesce,” or deteriorate because of its age. The tree cannot protect and heal itself as well, and soon finds itself a host for insects and disease it’s no longer able to fight off. The leaves begin to die and are shed for the final time and begin the fertilize the surrounding ground as they fall. Fungi and bacteria also make their way inside the tree, beginning to decompose the tree while it stands, and the nutrients held inside the tree are eaten by these invaders and returned to the soil below.

Insects lay their eggs under the bark, ensuring a new generation of essential decomposers in the environment. Larger insects, birds, and some small mammals join in on the feast, eating the insects that have been burrowing below the bark.  Woodpeckers probably view a dead tree like we might view our favorite grocery store – with a variety of all the good snacks. As they create holes digging for food and then fly off, other birds or animals can modify the holes to live in. Cavities bored into the snag become homes or shelters for a wide variety of animals, including owls, bats, squirrels, and even bees. The holes in these snags protect residents from the elements.

The leafless snag becomes an excellent perch for hawks to sit and watch for prey. Standing above low growing plants and with an unobstructed view, they’re in a prime position to watch for a meal as well as any potential challengers. At the bottom of the snag, and below the ground, fungi are working their way up, breaking down the tree and its roots ever so slowly, returning the nutrients back to the earth and to nearby trees through a mycorrhizal network of symbiotic fungi that live within tree roots.

Those nutrients are a blessing to young, small plants and saplings, who are given a boost with this natural fertilizer and finally able to grow tall with the sunlight reaching them now that the snag’s leafy canopy is no more.

Eventually, the tree will fall, but this process will continue. The twisted roots or hollow logs are used as homes for salamanders, rabbits’ nests, or as temporary hides for baby deer. The fallen tree may become fuel for a prescribed fire, further helping the growth of new life around it. The uprooting of trees lifts and mixes forest soil. Soil churning by the roots of fallen trees slows the development of layers of mineral deposits that become impervious to water. Without this process, standing pools of water would appear, creating swamps and significantly altering the area.

This process of decay and change can take years, even decades, to come full circle. Dead trees enrich the forest's structural complexity, offering a diverse array of microhabitats that support numerous ecological processes such as seed dispersal and pollination. Consequently, leaving dead trees intact contributes to the overall resilience and sustainability of forest ecosystems. 

Snags and fallen trees are excellent things to check out while hiking, and hopefully, you’ll make a point to watch and see who’s perching or crawling on one the next time you’re on at one of our parks or preserves.
